Affirming Artifacts: Next Steps

This week's designs are a complete departure from the metro card, the initial object that I had thrown out. I had been thinking of the subway as an egalitarian space to which the metro card grants temporary membership. This "turnstile" stool design is my first attempt at an egalitarian, public furniture intervention.

This is the stool in progress. I designed it like a kit of parts, so that it could be easily assembled by anyone.

Sam is demonstrating that the stool turns when only one person sits on it.

ISamRonaSit

Sam and Rona have to work together to sit/lean on the stool.

BarDesign

Allan and I decided that the stool would be more inviting to sit on if the bar had a contour.

This is my in-progress 3d model. If I decide to continue in this direction, the finished form might look like this.

Affirming Artifacts: Sketch Models

These were the first deliverables that I produced for my design intensive studio. The project was to redesign the first thing that you threw away after class, which was my spent metro card. These conceptual models celebrate the ease of use of the metro card, and add some social commentary. I particularly like the 3rd concept.

This last model is "Metro RX," a pill that you would take every day to ride the subway. Inspired by my bio-e buddies, I wanted to create a metro card that would use MR technology to allow for people to ride. Some of my other ideas were, "Brush to Bus," a camera that could sense if the passenger had brushed their teeth that day. Riders with good hygiene would be permitted to use the bus.

Saratoga, Wy

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to go on a little camping excursion in Wyoming with Laura's family. We stayed in a little community called Saratoga, which is about 80 miles West of Laramie. It was a blast with the balance of great day trips to Medicine Bow and being able to explore the town. Saratoga had a great vibe and a weirdo - quirky phone booth (which you will see later).

Here's a deer cooling off under an awning. They didn't call this RV park "Deer Haven" for nothin'!

This is the Holiday Rambler (trailer) parked under the tree accompanied by the beloved Moose (Ford truck). It happened to be peaceful spot where we had some delicious barbecue and read a little. If you didn't know, one of my favorite pass-times is skipping stones. The North Platt River proved to be a great venue as I managed to hurl hundreds of rocks into its calm water. Hopefully it didn't tick off our neighbors too much. From this spot we also saw a very scrappy looking immature Bald Eagle. Cool!

In the evening we ventured off into the town to take some photos. The colors and light in Saratoga were fantastic!

Denmark Pt. 3

Copenhagen_14

Another photo from the University of Copenhagen with yet another funky building! Laura ponders the might of Modernism as a young family strolls by.

Copenhagen_12

This revolving bike rack demonstrates that Copenhagen and the university are quite cycle-friendly.

Copenhagen_13

I fell in love with this fender/skirt protector design. If anyone knows where I can get one for my bike “Pinky,” please let me know.

On the way back to the hostel, we got caught in a torrential down pour. I snapped this pic of our communal room while waiting for my turn to shower (note the clothes hanging to dry on the top bunk). Danhostel was pretty luxurious in comparison to some of the places that we shacked up in Europe with the individual beds and private bathroom.

The view from our window!

Copenhagen_17

No rest for the cold, sick, and weary, back outside to check out the evening light!

This is one of my favorite shots from the trip - the sunset made for such soft tones and I like the sharp reflection of the flag.
