Denmark Pt. 3

Another photo from the University of Copenhagen with yet another funky building! Laura ponders the might of Modernism as a young family strolls by.


This revolving bike rack demonstrates that Copenhagen and the university are quite cycle-friendly.


I fell in love with this fender/skirt protector design. If anyone knows where I can get one for my bike “Pinky,” please let me know.


On the way back to the hostel, we got caught in a torrential down pour. I snapped this pic of our communal room while waiting for my turn to shower (note the clothes hanging to dry on the top bunk). Danhostel was pretty luxurious in comparison to some of the places that we shacked up in Europe with the individual beds and private bathroom.

This is one of my favorite shots from the trip - the sunset made for such soft tones and I like the sharp reflection of the flag.

Denmark Pt.1

Here are some shots from when Laura and I traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark last May.


This first one reminds me of Monet’s Water Lilies.


Such radical architecture! A good blend of old and new - each building surprisingly fits the holistic context of the city.


Just emphasizing the previous point with this image. I like Laura’s picture of me composing this shot better.


I wish the Towers at Pitt were as awesome as this dorm. Rotating bike racks, a central court yard, and crazy volumes projecting from the facade were just a few features of this thoughtful building that really hit home for me.

Polaroids!!!

While scouring the sublime depths of Youtube some time ago, I stumbled upon reviews of people testing Polaroid cameras that use **FRESH**, I repeat, fresh Fuji FP-100c pack film! These Automatic Land Cameras are common on Ebay and happen to be relatively inexpensive - mostly because the sellers don’t realize that people can still buy the film for them. The cameras resemble all things Star Wars with fold out bellows that are reminiscent of the blast cannons on Jaba the Hut’s Sand Skiff (nerdin’ out). Anyway, you just pop your little Fuji film pack in the back of the camera, snap a pic and... pull a tab? Yeah, well the shot doesn’t come flying out the front like the old integral Polaroid 600 film. You have to pull a little white tab and then the photo comes out through the rollers and... well you have to pull that out too and the while you do it the camera makes a satisfying “Shink!” sound. Then you gotta wait 2 minutes to peel the negative straight off the beautiful 3.25 X 4.25 inch print. So its a little more manual than the integral film we’re all used to, but what the hell, its $6 for a pack of 10 shots and the results are awesome with true, vivid and deeply saturated colors!..Oh, and to keep the Star Wars theme going, this little guy in the first photo taken on the golf course reminds me of an Imperial Probe Droid

MaMaMamiya

Currently I’m enrolled in an intermediate black and white photo class at Pittsburgh Filmmakers. Its a perfect opportunity for me to get acclimated to shooting with my recently acquired Mamiya M645 medium format SLR. In the past couple of weeks I’ve shot and developed around 7 rolls of 120 film! So far I’ve noticed a monumental leap in clarity, realism, and lack of barrel distortion as compared to 35mm shooting. The following images are scans of my darkroom prints - the first shots taken with my Mamiya.

More Berlin Photos

A couple shots of Mies’ Neue Staatsgalerie for all of my architecturally inclined friends out there. This building was at the top of my list of places to visit in Berlin, unfortunately I went on a day when it was closed. Made for some nice, wide open pictures though.
